The Danish company Carl Hansen & Søn turned 110 (unbelievable but true!) and, to celebrate this milestone, has launched a limited edition of the Wishbone Chair, one of my favorite chairs.
The Wishbone Chair (or CH24 chair) was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949. It was the first chair made by the architect for Carl Hansen & Søn and its production started in 1950. This chair has become such an icon of Scandinavian design that it has been produced uninterruptedly for almost 70 years.
The chair owes its name to the characteristic Y-shape of the back and the craftsmen of Carl Hansen & Son take about three weeks to make it. In fact, more than 100 operations are required to manufacture each chair, with most carried out by hand. The envelope-woven seat alone takes a skilled craftsman about one hour to create using approximately 120 meters of paper cord.
To celebrate its birthday, the Danish company has launched a special edition of the chair in eight new colors inspired by the world of nature: Rosy Blush, Russet Red, Deep Burgundy, Navy Blue, Oyster Gray, Forest Green, Midnight Blue and Deep Olive.
The special edition of the Wishbone Chair will only be available until December 31st at the price of € 575 including VAT.
Do you like this version of the CH24 chair? I find that the selection of colors is very beautiful but, I must admit, I continue to prefer the classic version in oak and natural cord.
